Jan 30, 2026 FBI Search of Fulton County Election Office Raises Serious Concerns for Free and Fair Elections, Says the National Task Force on Election Crises

On Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2026 the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) searched an election office in Fulton County, Georgia for ballots, tabulator tapes, and voter rolls from the 2020 presidential election. The cross-partisan National Task Force on Election Crises released the following statement:
“The abrupt FBI seizure of extensive 2020 election records from Fulton County, GA is an unprecedented intervention and raises serious concerns. Elections are administered by state and local officials subject to extensive rules and procedural safeguards. While we do not know the basis for the FBI warrant and how this investigation will proceed, we do know that the search and seizure appears to have been unnecessarily chaotic and to have broken critical chain of custody requirements for election materials from a long-settled election. Further, it comes amid unusual federal demands to gain access to sensitive voter files and perhaps equipment. These efforts pose additional challenges to election officials and threaten to undermine trust in their work and election results. It is essential that these officials be able to prepare for and conduct elections without disruptive interference and subject to well-established rules and safeguards.”
Facts about this search and investigation are still forthcoming, and Task Force members will be closely monitoring developments.
